What Is an IGRA Blood Test
and Why Does USCIS Require It?

You’ve probably seen “TB IGRA test” listed on your immigration paperwork and wondered what it actually means. Here’s the short version.

IGRA stands for Interferon-Gamma Release Assay. It’s a simple blood draw that checks whether your immune system has been exposed to Mycobacterium tuberculosis — the bacteria that causes TB. Unlike the old tuberculin skin test (TST), the IGRA blood test doesn’t require a follow-up visit to read results. One visit. Done.

A positive IGRA result does not automatically disqualify you from getting a green card. It means further evaluation is needed — usually a chest X-ray to rule out active tuberculosis disease.
